Dress Code

At Tecumseh Public School, we work together to prepare our students for success, now and in the future. We consider school to be a place of business, where the “business” is learning.

Because of this, all are expected to dress accordingly.

In an elementary school setting, clothing should be appropriate to the age and physical development of the learner. What may be appropriate for a first grader may not be appropriate for an older student.

Some guidelines for appropriate dress include but are not necessarily limited to:

  • Footwear must be worn at all times. It must be appropriate for safe participation in all types of school activities. Students are encouraged to have indoor and outdoor footwear
  • Articles of clothing and jewellery are not to promote positive messages about drugs, alcohol, violence or discrimination.
  • Students are encouraged to wear hats outdoors for warmth during cold weather and protection from the sun during warm weather. However, head wear is not to be worn inside the school, unless required for medical or religious reasons or specific permission has been given by the principal. Sunglasses are also not to be worn in the school unless required for medical reasons.
  • Shirts, blouses, tops and other articles of clothing should be of a style that is not low cut or potentially revealing.
  • At no time should undergarments, midriffs, cleavage, buttocks and excessive skin be exposed.

The final decision on appropriateness of clothing rests with the school’s staff and principal. Students who are deemed to be in contravention of the dress code will be counselled and given the opportunity to change if appropriate clothing is available, cover up, or turn the article of clothing inside out, if it contains inappropriate language or graphics. Students who are unable to or unwilling to change will be sent home. Parents will be contacted if this is necessary.

*Our Dress Code will be reviewed during the 2018-2019 school year*
